For those of you in the GTA, did anyone have anything happen to them with the storm? We had the power go out for a few hours, which was kind of fun with the kids, but the only damage that happened had nothing to do with the storm.
Last week I published the first newsletter, and the website wasn't quite ready. I knew that going in, but the goal was to get a couple of issues into the archive before the "real" launch, to find a rhythm, try things out, and grease the wheels a bit.
But I didn't just launch early, I also took the risk of sharing it publicly on LinkedIn, flaws and all. And there were a lot of flaws, the biggest being how the website rendered on mobile.
Having worked at tech companies for most of my career, and being a smartphone user myself, I know how important mobile-first design is when launching a digital product. I just didn't do it. Building on desktop is easier, so that's what I defaulted to. I'd check mobile occasionally, but I should've been checking it first, or at least a lot more often.
Still, launching early did something else that mattered more than any mistake people found: it was cathartic.
I've been building this slowly for a few months, and things take time. Every week didn't necessarily bring me closer to launch, because every task I finished surfaced three more I wanted to do. That's kind of the point, there will always be more to do. So I set myself a deadline and just shipped.
Last week we had two subscribers. Me, and one random person who somehow found the publication. But the benefit of releasing it, and the internal pressure it took off me, was far greater than any damage from launching too early. It gave me clarity and focus on what to do next.
Here's what we got done last week:
Edited several articles and added a CTA reinforcing the value of paid membership
Added images to articles that were missing them (more still to go)
Created a post-signup welcome email for free subscribers
Activated 3 new partnerships
The mobile version of the site is still an issue and remains the top priority, and hopefully we crack it next week.
In the meantime, what are your plans for Labour Day?
